Welcome to our fold in the beautiful Eden Valley!

Our Story

We’re Jacob and Jenni — partners sharing a passion for nature and Highland cattle. Together, we care for a small fold in the Eden Valley, Cumbria.

The Fringe And The Fold began with a simple idea: that traditional Highland cattle could help care for land and wildlife, while also giving people the opportunity to connect with these charismatic animals and the natural world.
What started as a shared fascination with these remarkable creatures gradually grew into a small fold in the Eden Valley, where we now care for the herd and the landscape they graze.
Jenni’s deep love for Highland cows fills her home with artwork and comes to life in the field. You’ll often find her chatting away, grooming brush in hand, skilfully dodging the occasional swinging horn as she tends to the fold.
Jacob, with a background in life sciences, ecology, and species recovery, shapes our approach to land and herd management.
Together, our mission is to use regenerative grazing to restore balance, boost biodiversity, and improve soil health. Highland cattle are the perfect partners — hardy, gentle, and able to thrive on the rough, low-input pasture where other breeds might struggle.

Though we’re new to this land, we’re laying the groundwork for long-term change. Jacob carries out ecological surveys so we can monitor biodiversity over time, and we’ll adapt our grazing and management as we learn — and yes, the occasional cattle escape is all part of the journey.
In time, we hope to grow our herd and the land we manage, transforming it into a rich, biodiverse ecosystem.
You can support our work by choosing to adopt a Highland cow.
And one day soon, we hope to welcome visitors to meet the fold here in Cumbria.
